Dylan Jonas Stone making shirts
Dylan Jonas Stone will set up a sewing station in the basement of the Steamroom dry-cleaners on Kingsland Road, Dalston.
During this time, he will make shirts. Shirts for people he knows, people in the community, and for total strangers. The recipient of each shirt will be noted in a logbook, along with the date of the gift and a scrap of the fabric with which each shirt was made. Visitors will be invited to observe the process and to converse with Dylan.
My mother taught me how to sew using her Husqvarna sewing machine when I was fourteen. Her mother had given her money to buy the sewing machine in 1948, when she left home at the age of seventeen. When I was seventeen, my mother bought me the Elna sewing machine that I use today.
As a teenager, I loved making clothes; the sewing machine was the first tool I learned how to use. When I turned nineteen, I discovered art school. - Dylan Jonas Stone
Dylan Jonas Stone (b. 1967, New York) completed a M.F.A. at the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1997. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Orkney Library and Archive, Scotland, UK, 2017; MUSLIMuseum of Childrens’ Books, Turin, Italy, 2017; Josée Bienvenu, New York, NY, 2015; Ruth Phaneuf Fine Arts, New York, NY, 2013; Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, New York, NY, 2006; Gimpel Fils, London, UK, 2005 and is in the collection of The New York Public Library and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas, TX. He lives and works in London.
Rowena Chiu is a London-based curator who completed a MA in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths College in 2005. She has curated solo exhibitions for Sally Webber at Generation & Display, London, UK, 2018; Piers Jackson at UNIT9, London, UK, 2018; Alice Anderson at UNIT9, London, UK, 2017; Jakub Julian Ziolkowski at BWA Galeria, Zamość, Poland, 2017 and group exhibitions for artists including Henry Krokatsis, Nathaniel Rackowe, Hiraki Sawa, Yukako Shibata, Philippe Vandenberg, Nick Waplington and David Zink Yi. Making Shirts by Dylan Jonas Stone is hosted by Steamroom Creative, an initiative set up by Eulan To and TonyChung to support creative projects that share their core values of promoting sustainability and community.
