This exhibition at The Steam Room project space focuses on the artist’s, The Dark Times & related works (2007-2020). The site is transformed into the GOOD TIMES DARK TIMES PRESS OFFICE centred around the Editor’s Desk: An exhibition meets time-spaced installation, unthink tank, art and broadcasting studio.

Between 2007-2010, the artist created a Dark Times newspaper on an almost daily basis, since when they have been made more intermittently and to mark events. He recently made the second of The Good Times (‘the dark times with a smile’), as a birthday present for artist Gavin Turk, an extension of the project he had considered making for some time, and over the course of the exhibition he will make a Good Times work daily; these will then be shown on the last day and closing event of the exhibition on the 5th March, when a ltd signed edition T-Shirt will also be available. The show will see the launch of the GOOD TIMES DARK TIMES TV a new collaboration with his son artist/musician Joseph Sakoilsky, a series of recorded and live-streamed dialogues and performances with invited guests round the Editor’s Desk. The programming will be announced on the 20th Feb. The show will also include the Good Times Rag Store, overpainted/upcycled clothes, in the vein of the artist’s painted jackets, for which the public can make an appointment to commission an article of clothing to be upcycled, ameliorated and turned into a wearable artwork. Paul Sakoilsky’s ‘famous non-publication’, The Dark Times, has been described as ‘ hybridised autopsies of media images, in visceral terms, that act upon the daylight utopias of consumerism and media ideology’. He started it in January 2007 as somewhat of a personal joke, which then grew a life of its own. At its heart lies a series of hundreds of overpainted/collaged newspaper covers. The DTs ‘'newspapers', paintings, objects/assemblages and performances have been shown, published and collected internationally. Most recently works from the project have been exhibited (20218-2019) in ‘Transformazione’ Palazzo Ducale de Massa (Italy), Gallery 46 (London), ‘Geld in der Kunst’ Kunst im Traklhaus (Austria), and Angus-Hughes Gallery (London). At a time where we hold little to no trust in our politicians, fear our news sources, and stare deeply at the climate crisis & the rest, the artist holds a furious funhouse mirror to this moment and questions ‘Is this really the dark times?’ - After all you should know that Sakoilsky is a crazed philosopher, a sort of Diogenes Laërtius (Kynic) of our time, who spits, snarls and simultaneously blows kisses of paint, words and laughter at our monstrous beautiful world.
